Favourite Christmas Albums Part 2

So have you ever set out to do something and then end up on a YouTube journey, 4 hours later you’re trying to re-focus on what you started out doing? That’s exactly how writing this entry turned out.

For this week’s selection we have Brian Culbertson’s – A Soulful Christmas. I don’t even know where to begin describing the level of awesome that was magically put on this one record.  This is essentially an all-star multi Grammy winning ensemble.

Brian Culbertson is quite simply a legendary multi instrumentalist best known “the Barry White of smooth jazz”…and maybe his 12 awards. A Soulful Christmas features collaborations with Michael Macdonald, and a Bass Battalion featuring Nathan East, Brian Bromberg, Alex Al, and Maurice Fitzgerald to name a few.
What I love most about this album is that it has a bit of everything, from a full orchestra; to gospel choir arrangements. Not to mention some of the wickedest funky bass lines. Brian’s version of ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’ shows just how groovy a simple song can be. Give it a listen and you’ll see.

A close second would be ‘All Through the Christmas Night’ featuring the hypnotic vocals of Michael McDonald. Brian Culbertson is a genius composer and I don’t use that term lightly. I hope you enjoy listening to some of the songs here.

Next week’s album I can guarantee you won’t expect 😉
